１４　《記憶》

 

「こんなやつら一人じゃ到底かなわねぇ！

協力して始末してやろうじゃないの！」

ハジメが短剣の先を物体に向け、

間合いを取りながら言った。

「このヤリでも倒れないとは、

確かにギゾラとして認めてやるぜ！」

ケンジがヤリを武道のように振りかざしながら言った。

 

残りの二体を同じようなやり方でなんとか倒すと、

滝の上に残っていた巨体と数体が

後方の岩場に姿を消していくのが見えた。

 

急にエミリがその場に座り込んで言った。

「なんなの、あいつら〜！　

腰が抜けたわよ！　

こんな目に遭うなら、ヤンと替わらなきゃ良かった！！」

「いやいや、君の活躍のおかげで

ギゾラを撃退できたのではないかと思いますけど！」

ハジメが息を整えながら言った。

「その名前、やめてよ！　

夢にまで出てきそうじゃないのよ！」

エミリが両目を塞ぎながら言った。

「とりあえず本部に連絡しよう」

シンイチロウがそう言って、

メットデッキを置いてある場所まで移動した。

 

滝壺の周りで倒れている物体の映像を本部に送信して、

この一連の出来事を報告した。

本部長オカムラはしばし堅い表情を見せたが、

直ちに一号ボートの四人と治安部隊を

ヴィェタラウシ川からこちらに向かわせることになった。

 

雨と汗でずぶ濡れになったシンイチロウは、

あの物体の姿から、

かつて十九地区のどこかで読んだことのある

１４　《MEMORY》

"These monsters can not afford it by themselves!

Let's cooperate and get rid of it! "

Hajime turned the end of the dagger towards the object

Kenzi said,

swinging his spear like a martial art.

 

They managed to defeat the remaining two objects in the same way,

that remained above the waterfall disappeared into the rocky area behind.

 

Emily suddenly sat down on the spot and said.

If it would be such a thing,

Hajime said with fixed the breath.

１３　《牙》

 

「何なんだ、

あのハードコアなやつら！？」

ケンジが

電熱式ヤリをジャキーンと構えた。

「どう見てもオレたちを襲撃するようにしか見えない！　

ギゾラよ！　

これでも喰らえ！！」

シンイチロウが

先頭の物体を目掛けてライフル銃をぶっ放した。

 

銃声音の後、

「ギ〜ッ！！」という断末魔の叫び声とともに

後ろに吹き飛んだ物体は、

倒れたまま動かなくなった。

それでも他の物体は止まることもなく、

絶えずシュ〜ッと吠えながら

眼をギラギラと光らせて向かってきた。

 

雨が降りしきる中、

エミリの毒矢が飛び交い、

その中で格闘するハジメとケンジ。

シンイチロウも短剣を出して戦いに加わった。

ハジメに襲いかかった物体が

牙を大きく見せて身体に噛みつこうとした刹那、

エミリの吹き矢がその背中に突き刺さり、

痙攣した後にドサッと下に崩れ落ちた。

「ひゅ〜っ！　

なんちゅう威力、サンクス！」

ハジメがエミリにウインクした。

 

その近くではケンジがヤリで物体の腹を突き刺したが、

相手は片手でヤリの柄を握ったままケンジの肩をもう一方の手で押さえつけた。

ケンジは直ぐに電熱スイッチを入れたが、

物体は体を少しピクピクさせたくらいで、

やはり口を大きく開いて鋭い牙で噛みつこうとした。

 

一瞬の後、

物体の横腹にシンイチロウの短剣が食い込むのと

エミリの吹き矢が突き立つのが同時に起こり、

力が鈍くなった物体から

ヤリを抜き取ったケンジがとどめを刺した。

 

 

１３　《FANG》

 

"What are those hardcore guys?"

Kenzi set up an electric spear with aim.

Shin-Ichirou aimed at the head object and shot the rifle.

 

After the gunshot sound,

an object blown behind with a cry of the apocalyptic saying "Gi〜〜!",

the other objects never ceased,

and constantly shook and barked and caught their eyes shining brightly.

 

Amidst the rain,

Emily's poisonous arrows fluttered,

and Hajime and Kenji fighting in it.

Shin-Ichirou also joined the fight with a dagger.

１２　《ハードコア》

 

シンイチロウが三人の顔に恐怖の表情を読み取るのと同時に、

あの強烈な臭いがまた全身を襲った。

後ろを振り返ると、

滝の上に黒い物体が五体また十体と姿を現し、

こちらを黙ったまま見下ろしているのだった。

 

四人は急に声が出なくなったが、

なんとか視線をそらさないように

じりじりと自分たちの武器を取るように合図を出し合った。

エミリは吹き矢と毒の入った容器を出し、

ハジメは短剣をケースから抜き、

ケンジは家畜の用電熱式ヤリを取り、

シンイチロウはライフル銃の弾丸を用意した。

 

黒い物体は、

体長が成人の人間より一回りも大きく見え、

全身が黒と褐色の長い体毛で覆われていた。

頭部は眼が異様に細長くて鼻がなく、

大きな口の横からは牙先がはみ出していた。

首は太くて手足が人間の倍ほどの大きさもありそうな、

極めて野性的でいて無機質な印象を放っていた。

 

しかし、

その真ん中で一際背の高い物体が口を開けて鋭い牙を見せながら腕を振り下ろすと、

周りの物体が凄まじい勢いで滝壺に向かって飛び降り始めた。

そして、

シュ〜ッという吠え声を上げながら

こちらに向かってばしゃばしゃと突進してくるのが見えた。

 

「ちょっと、ロウ！　

なんとかしてっ！！」

エミリがヒステリックに叫び、

彼の直ぐ横に近寄ってきた。

「うっひょ〜っ！　

お出ましだぜっ、、、

なんて余裕こいてる場合じゃねえな！」

ハジメが短剣の柄を強く握りしめた。

 

 

１２　《HARDCORE》

 

Shin-Ichirou reads the expression of horror on the three faces,

And it could see the rushing towards this side while uttering a barking voice.

Emily shouted hysterically and came immediately beside him.

１１　《黒い影》

 

曇った空からポツリポツリと落ちてくる雨。

ロープを結ぶために、

シンイチロウは滝を登っていった。

最上部の岩の間から伸びている木に手を伸ばした瞬間、

強烈な臭いが彼の身体を襲った。

 

獣？

 

振り向くと、

岩場の陰に消えていく黒いものを視界に捉えた。

咄嗟にロープを放り投げて、

それが消えた方向へと動き出していた。

岩場に両手両足をかけて進み、

しばらく登りと下りを繰り返しているうちに

どこか不自然な岩場が目に入ったので、

小高い岩の上で立ち上がってその方向を見た。

 

ここは・・・

 

目の前に拡がる見たこともない光景。

岩と岩との間に

三・四十平方メートルほどはありそうな平らな部分があり、

真ん中には

動物の骨とみられる残骸が

分厚い層になって積み上げられていた。

 

シェヴル？　

地区のシンボル・・・

 

そしてその周りを、

何百本もあろうかという動物の角（つの）が

円を描いて縁取るように突き立てられていて、

それらを青い花が所狭しと囲んでいた。

雨粒が青い花びらや黄緑色の葉の上を伝って流れ落ちていて、

まるで屍を前に涙を流しているように見えた。

 

シンイチロウは注意深く周りを見回したが、

さっきの強烈な臭いと黒い影の気配はもうどこにも感じられなかった。

ここは早く知らせることが大事に思え、

それ以上は踏み込むのをやめて、

滝の下の三人がいる場所まで戻っていった。

 

「もう、

どこに行ってたのよ、ロウ」

エミリが乾パンを口に入れながら言った。

「この先に墓場があるぜ」

そう言った途端、

三人の動きが止まった。

 

 

１１　《BLACK SHADE》

 

The rain fell off the clouds from the cloudy sky.

１０　《岩場》

 

イタチの道は山麓まで続き、

そこから山頂までは東西にそれぞれ

『黒イタチ』と『白イタチ』に分岐する。

前者は、

『前パンケ』と呼ばれる寄生火山のコブを越えて尾根と稜線を通るルートで、

一般に利用されている。

後者は、

ヴィェタラウシ川支流沿いの滝と岩場を登るルートで、

全体に崩落箇所が多く危険なため利用者がほとんどいないとされる。

 

二号ボート組の四人は、

包み紙が見つかったヴィェタラウシ川支流を通る

『白イタチ』から山頂を目指し、

滝を越える時にはロープを使いながら進んでいった。

 

「あんもう、

私の腕を引っ張ってよ、ロウ！」

エミリが

背中の吹き矢ケースを木の枝に引っ掛けないように気を付けながら言った。

「やれやれ、

そのうちオレたちがあのケースを持たされるかもな」

ハジメがニヤッとしてケンジに言った。

「まあな。

でも容器を持たされて身体中が毒だらけになるよりはマシかもな」

ケンジは頭からまともに毒を被ったような素振りをして、

おどけた表情を見せた。

 

落石などがありヒヤリとした箇所もあったが、

五合目付近に差し掛かった。

「ここが最後の滝になりそうだが、

今のうちに休憩でもしておくか？」

シンイチロウが誰ともなく尋ねてみた。

「ここで休もうよ。

わたし手袋がボロボロだしお腹も空いたし」

エミリが間髪を入れずに言った。

三人が食料を出している間、

シンイチロウは滝の最上部にある木の幹にロープを取り付けるつもりで、

単独で登っていった。

 

 

 

１０　《ROCKY AREA》

climbing alone.
